The second stage of Fjällräven Classic leads from the Hochgratbahn over the Hündle to Kalzhofen. The highlight: the Buchenegg waterfalls!

The second stage of the trip starts pretty leisurely: Along the Weißach we hike to the Buchenegger waterfalls. They are located in the deep ravine of the Weißach and are among the most beautiful waterfalls in the Allgäu. On hot days, people like to bathe in the Weißach here, but be careful: the water is ice cold even in the middle of summer!

After we have climbed out of the gorge on the other side in steep serpentines, we continue through a cultural landscape that is typical for the Allgäu. We hike across alpine meadows with grazing cows, through small forests and past many small alpine huts.

The main ascent of this day's stage leads us to the Moosalpe (nice place to stop for a break!) and on to the Hündlekopf. After we have enjoyed the panoramic view into the valley from the top, the steep descent from the Hündle follows before we make the final push to our day's destination in Kalzhofen.

Author’s recommendation

If you want to enjoy the view on the Hündle a little longer, you can easily shorten the descent with the cable car. There is also a summer toboggan run here!

Turn-by-turn directions

At the valley station of the Hochgratbahn we start by crossing the Weißach. We continue hiking on the right side of the stream for about 2 km, then we cross the Weißach again on the Tarzansteg, a narrow pedestrian bridge.

We follow the gravel road for about 600 m, then we turn right towards Buchenegger Wasserfälle. We pass a farm, then go straight on for a bit between the meadows before the steep descent to the Buchenegger waterfalls.

After a break at the river banks below the waterfalls, the trail continues steeply uphill on the other side of the river. Over many serpentines, the path leads up through the forest for almost 150 meters in altitude. Finally, we come to a small parking lot, where we turn right onto the service road.

Now follows a beautiful, long stretch of the path through the alpine landscape, past the Tura-Alpe, the Ochsenschwand-Alpe and up to the Moos-Alpe. After a break, we turn west here and once again climb steeply up to the mountain ridge. Accompanied by beautiful views we hike past the Hochsiedel-Alpe to the Hündlekopf. Below the summit, there are two places to stop for refreshments: The Obere Hündle-Alpe and the restaurant at the Hündle mountain railroad.

If you don't take the cable car down to the valley, hike down to the valley on a steep forest path - turn left from the mountain inn, then right behind the small hut along the meadow path. At the bottom we then meet an asphalt road and turn right to the valley station of the Hündle cable car. Here we cross under the main road, then over the railroad crossing and through the village.

Along the eastern flank of the striking Staufen mountain, we finally arrive in Kalzhofen. At the event, our destination for the day is a camp located east of the village.
