1241 – Siegfried von Mügeln begründet das Kloster „St. Marienthal“. Damit wird Sornzig – dank der Nonnen vom Orden der Zisterzienser – zur historischen Wiege des Obstbaus in der Region um Mügeln. 1539 wird das Kloster in Folge der Reformation aufgelöst und bis 1892 Staatsgut mit wechselnden Besitzern. Zu wahrhaft neuer Blüte kommt der Obstbau durch den Leipziger Stadtplaner Ludolf Colditz, der 1895 die Kloster Gärtnerei GmbH Sornzig begründet. Enteignung der Familie Colditz 1946. Der Obstbau wird nun in einer LPG und seit 1990 in der Klosterobst GmbH erfolgreich weiter geführt. Das denkmalgeschützte Ensemble des Klosters in Sornzig ist heute ein beliebter Ort der Begegnung, Bildung und Erholung. Es liegt inmitten einer Parklandschaft mit drei Obstwiesen (Wild- und Streuobst). Träger ist die Stiftung Dr. Ludolf Colditz Kloster Marienthal.
